About the Audit Requirement

Under the Commercial Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance, building owners are required to have an ASHRAE Level 2 energy audit of their building conducted every ten years. In an energy audit, an approved professional will walk through your building and make recommendations on how to improve your building’s efficiency and operations. You are free to choose which, if any, of those recommendations to implement; the point is to understand the potential for improvement and allow building owners to make informed business decisions. Summary energy audit reports should be submitted to the City using the web-based Asset Score tool.

Using Asset Score

The Department of Energy’s Building Energy Asset Score (Asset Score) is a national standardized tool for evaluating the physical and structural energy efficiency of commercial and multifamily residential buildings. The City of Atlanta worked collaboratively with the Department of Energy to customize the tool to record and analyze energy audit data required for submission by the City’s Commercial Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance.

Your energy audit service provider can submit data by creating an account on the Asset Score website and entering information for the required data fields. For instructions and user guides, please see below:

Asset Score Audit Reporting Tool Webinar

The City of Atlanta’s Commercial Buildings Energy Efficiency Ordinance requires commercial buildings above 25,000 square feet to obtain an ASHRAE Level II or equivalent energy audit every 10 years. In order to comply, the City will require summary audit reports to be submitted for review through the Department of Energy’s Asset Score Audit Reporting Tool. This web-based platform allows service providers to easily input their audit data and track their submission.
